Microsoft Won't Fight the iPad or Android Tablets Until the End of 2012. Ugh. [Rumor]

Unbelievable. If this is true. Businessweek reports that Microsoft "won't release a competitor to Apple Inc. and Google Inc.'s tablet operating systems until the 2012 back-to- school season." More »

This Just In: Facebook Makes Millenials Even More Insufferable (TCTV)

In case recent political uprisings have given us too many reasons to feel good about the impact Facebook is having in the world, we just got a study from Cornell that shows the mega-site is also helping boost millenials' self-esteem. Because, you know, the so-called "self-esteem generation" needs more of that. All quips about millineals aside, the study trumpets the findings as a sign that the Internet is doing something good for the world. To us, it proves the exact opposite. The reason Facebook boosted college kids' self-esteem more than looking in a mirror (we're not kidding, that was the methodology) was because it's an artificial representation of ourselves, the we that we wish we were. Since when did we count self-awareness and true self-examination as negatives? Video below.

Nielsen: Android Pulls Ahead Of RIM And iOS For U.S. Smartphone Share

Nielsen has just released new data on U.S. smartphone share. According to the report, smartphone powered by Android operating systems (29 percent) is pulling ahead of RIM's Blackberry (27 percent) and Apple iOS (27 percent). But Nielsen says that because RIM and Apple create and sell their own smartphones with their operating systems, these companies are actually in a better position in the three-way race (in terms of device manfuacturers). Because Google licenses its OS to device manufacturers, the Android ecosystem is more fragmented.

This Night-Vision Camera Sees Color [Video]

Cameras that can see in the dark are nothing special. But how much detail can you really get from that fuzzy, green, Buffalo Bill-o-vision? The Color Night Vision Camera, though, can reproduce red, blue, and green even through the pitch black darkness, using the magic of infrared. More »

Sprint bringin 'the latest in wireless innovation at CTIA' this month

Sprint at CTIA

We don't usually post all of our upcoming individual show events here on the front page. (We do, however, post our show schedule here.) But because so many were worried Sprint was getting out of the smartphone business after a relative no-show at CES in January, we'll make an exception this time.

As for what we'll see? More likely than not, something with the name "EVO" attached. Might be a true sequel, but remember that Sprint's told us the original EVO 4G and EVO Shift 4G are just the first in what will be a growing EVO brand.

Anyhoo, we'll be at CTIA in a couple of weeks to bring it all to you.

Mac OS X requires a helper program to connect to Android 3.0 tablets

Android File Transfer, Honeycomb OS X bonding
Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the OS that runs on the recently-released Motorola Xoom, will not bond with Mac OS X unless you install a helper program on your PC first.

The program, which is aptly named Android File Transfer, provides third-party Media Transfer Protcol (MTP) support, which Mac OS X doesn't natively provide. MTP started off as a Windows Media Player technology, which is probably why Apple doesn't support it, but today it's represented by a standard USB device class and an extension of its precursor, PTP.

MTP support is definitely a step up as far as Android is concerned. Rather than 'turn on mass storage mode,' which locks local apps out of your SD card, MTP allows both the phone and the PC to access your phone's filesystem at the same time. Hopefully Medial Transfer Protocol will find its way to the smartphone version of Android in due course

Incidentally, it's possible that the upcoming version of OS X, Lion, could support MTP. If anyone has Lion, and a Motorola Xoom, we'd love to know if you've had any luck connecting them.

Apple Digital AV Adapter Works With Old iPads, Too

Yesterday’s Apple event wasn’t all about the iPad 2. If you have any of Apple’s existing iOS devices, there’s something for you, too.
First, there’s iOS 4.3, which brings some goodies for all iDevices. Really though, this release feels more like a bug-fix release, and adds in the features — like full AirPlay support — that [...]

AIST shows off full-color night vision camera, well lit Bullwinkle figurine (video)

You might know them for seemingly ridiculous innovations like Segway shoes or the HRP-4C pop star robot, but the folks at AIST have put away the gimmicks for their latest invention -- a full-color night vision camera. Produced by Nanolux, an arm of AIST, the camera uses a series of algorithms to read and process wavelengths reflected by objects lit with infrareds, allowing it to successfully reproduce reds, blues, and greens in the darkest of conditions. The company hopes to make the device available by the end of 2011 at a price point lower than conventional night vision cameras, and says they will work with different lenses to improve long-range photography for the device. Such an invention could have serious implications for fields like surveillance and wildlife observation, but fear not, AIST hasn't lost its sense of humor -- the company used a Bullwinkle figurine rotating on a Lazy Susan to demo its latest invention at Printable Electronics 2011. Check out the video after the jump.
