SendGenie offers simple drag and drop file sharing for Windows and Mac

SendGenie is a slick new app (currently in open beta testing) which makes sharing files and photos as easy as dragging and dropping. Once installed, SendGenie adds a dropzone widget to your desktop which you can hide and unhide via the system tray icon. When you want to zap a file to a friend, just drag it onto the dropzone (yes, the wizard hat that you see above). Your file will be added to a send queue, and you can then choose the people you want to send the file (or files) to.

SendGenie also supports contact groups, so you can build a list for your department at work, your family, or your clan mates for easy mass sharing. You can also send clipboard contents -- like screenshots -- by tapping the Paste button in the main window and naming your clip. Once uploaded, your contacts will receive an email with a link to a page from where they can download your files. Friends running SendGenie on their desktop can choose to automatically receive files you send -- they'll appear in Documents\Me SendGenie\Your Email Address\Inbox\.

The app can optionally auto-resize photos you share, but there are no settings you can tweak. We'd like to see that option added before the final release, but SendGenie is still a very slick, easy-to-use desktop app for sharing files with your contacts.

Will You Miss The Browser Address Bar If Google Kills It?

Say goodbye to your address bar? maybe. Google is mulling over replacing the address bar found in its Chrome Web browser with something less intrusive (if that's the word to use). In one scenario, the address bar would only become visible when, say, the mouse pointer is hovered over a certain area of the screen. At all other times the address bar would vanish from the interface. The (possible) changes come soon after the release of the latest Internet Explorer 9 beta (technically it's a release candidate at this point). Mozilla may hate the browser, but the interface is the most ?radical? of the bunch. For starters the tab bar and the address bar are on the same Y axis, which Microsoft says helps sites ?shine.? (You always get the feeling that Microsoft tries too hard when it comes to verbiage.) Obviously what Internet Explorer does is irrelevant to the Mac and Linux users in the audience, be it serves as an example of where modern browser design may be going.

CorelDraw video tutorial: Pulling in photos and clip art from the Web

corelconnect
This is the fourth (and final) of our CorelDRAW video tutorials. You can watch the others by browsing the CorelDRAW tag.

When creating a vector image or a composition, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. After all, it is more than likely that whatever it is you're trying to do has been done before, at least in part. Using existing images or clip art ("media assets" in business parlance) can greatly speed up your work, and even improve the overall look of the image you produce.

To this end, I've chosen to create a video showing Corel Connect. It's a media search engine that comes with CorelDRAW, and helps you pull in images from Flickr, Fotolia, iStockphoto, and of course, your local hard drive and CorelDRAW's own clip art repositories.

Corel Connect ties in very tightly with CorelDRAW itself, and also does a nice job of protecting the original creator's rights so you don't "forget" to license whatever content you're using. See for yourself after the jump!

Video: Connected Medical Devices At The GSMA Embedded Mobile House

The Embedded Mobile House at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2011? It sounded like science fiction to me or like one of those old IBM commercials hype-ing RFID for transportation logistics. It sounded painful...just where exactly was it embedded? Seriously, I figured it would be a ?flying cars/kitchen of tomorrow? type thing where all the devices in the house were controlled by a central computer with a fabulously attractive voice telling me my souffl was finished. Nope. It was way more boring than that. But boring is not to say without value. In fact sometimes the things that work well are not flashy nor eye-catching. They are instead the kind of things you don?t notice at all (or at least don?t notice until they stop working). I think that was what I took away from the Embedded Mobile House. I took away that when this kind of conceptreaches the masses?the concept of small simple tools and devices "embedded" with the ability to communicate their status?it would be a transparent experience.

Breakup Notifier Emails You When People You?re Stalking On Facebook Change Their Relationships

"Zuckerberg sometimes amused himself by conducting experiments. For instance, he concluded that by examining friend relationships and communications patterns he could determine with about 33 percent accuracy who a user was going to be in a relationship with a week from now. To deduce this he studied who was looking which profiles, who your friends were friends with, and who was newly single, among other indicators." -- David Kirkpatrick's The Facebook Effect
Dan Loewenherz was sitting up one night with fiance and his mom, trying to conjure up a guy to set up with his fiance's sister. They finally came up with the perfect guy, enthusiastically checked the guy's Facebook profile and to much disappointment, saw that he was in a relationship. I know this has happened to you: You meet a great guy or girl, immediately run to Facebook or Google to Internet stalk them and find out that they're spoken for. Boo.

Windows Phone 7 update to bring Twitter and SkyDrive integration, webOS style multitasking

The way webOS handles task switching -- via its card interface -- is one of my favorite features of Palm/HP's mobile OS. Microsoft seems to like it, too, at least that's what we assume since the Windows Phone 7 multitasking update will bring a very similar experience. In the image above, you can see a zoomed-out display of all currently running apps, which you'll be able to flick through and tap to switch. Microsoft initially omitted this kind of multitasking due to battery concerns, but say that's no longer an issue.

Windows Phone 7 users will also be receiving full-featured Twitter and SkyDrive integration, and, of course, Internet Explorer Mobile 9 (check the images in the gallery). All the goodness is set to arrive "later in 2011."

Huawei offers to build out London Underground cellular coverage for free

No such thing as a free lunch, is there? China's Huawei has generously offered to pick up the roughly £50 million ($81 million) tab for equipment to line London's sprawling subway system with mobile phone reception, a package it says it's extending as a gift from Olympic host nation to another (London will host the 2012 Summer Olympics, and it has said in the past that it'd like the Tube wired in time). The official line is that Huawei would make its money back over time through maintenance contracts, but some politicians are raising red flags over the Chinese firm's potential control over a critical piece of London's wireless infrastructure -- a sentiment that seemed to help kill a potential Huawei deal with Sprint in the States. Of course, the over-connected nerd in us is tempted to brush off espionage concerns if it means we can stay on email all the way from the West End to the Docklands.

This Is Business, Not Personal.

In Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film The Godfather, there's a scene between Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sonny Corleone (James Caan) that plays out like this:
Tom: Your father wouldn't want to hear this, Sonny. This is business not personal. Sonny: They shoot my father and it's business, my ass! Tom: Even shooting your father was business not personal, Sonny!
Events the past few days in the tech ecosystem have reminded me of this scene. As we've all heard by now, yesterday, Twitter made what seemed to be a quick and drastic decision to block a number of popular Twitter third-party clients, namely, UberTwitter and Twidroyd. Both of those, of course, are owned and operated by UberMedia, a company which is quickly buying up a significant part of the Twitter ecosystem ? presumably to figure out a way to monetize it.

Carrot is a soothing time-waster featuring bunnies and puppies

Carrot gameSo... you've got a cute pet rabbit, and rabbits like carrots. That makes Carrot rabbit heaven, if there is such a thing: The game takes place on a long, lush lawn, with a line of carrots stretching into the distance, as far as the eye can see. Mmmm, carrots.

But of course, this wouldn't be much of a game if you were just running along, eating carrot after carrot. That wouldn't be very challenging. That's where the dogs come in: For every carrot, you have a puppy running back and forth across the screen.

If your bunny hits a dog, it's going to blink (and that, as we all know, means "ouch"). If it hits too many dogs, you lose. But your bunny can't move left or right, and it can't even move faster or stop!

So what do you do? You leash the dogs, of course. Basically, when you click a dog and drag it, a leash appears and the dogs is drawn to wherever you drag. There's a bit of a lag due to the leash being elastic, but if you're fast enough, you can keep the dogs from touching the rabbit.

There are also neat power-ups: You may notice my bunny has a rotor in the screenshot; the rotor lets it fly smoothly over the dogs, and it still somehow manages to eat the carrots. Of course, it doesn't last forever, and eventually the bunny lands and you have to keep leashing the dogs.

All in all, a very cute game, with a lovely soundtrack to boot.

The Too-Many Faces of 'Cyberwar'

Late last year, an online battle erupted when Wikileaks supporters attacked the websites of businesses that had attempted to sever ties with the online leak depository following Wikileaks' release of thousands of secret U.S. State Department cables. Is it fair to call the dust-up to first cyberwar?

Add custom search engines to your browser easily with Mycroft

One of the oldest -- yet somehow least-lauded projects in existence -- is Mycroft. Perhaps its under-hypedness is due to its total simplicity -- Mycroft is nothing more than a massive directory of search plug-ins that you can add to Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. Check the top 100, and you'll get some idea of Mycroft's scale.

For Firefox and Internet Explorer, this means you can search just about every site in existence from the Search bar in the top right corner of your browser. For Chrome users, this means you get even more functionality from the uber Omnibar.

Incidentally, Chrome users, did you know that you could use specific search engines from the Omnibar? When you grab a search plug-in, make sure you provide a keyword. Make it something short -- like 'pb' for Pirate Bay or 'imdb' for IMDb -- and then, when you want to search The Pirate bay, just type pb, followed by your search term.

While we're on the same topic, in Firefox, you can do something similar with Smart keywords.

Download every Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit photo with a simple Perl script

After the runaway success of last year's Sports Illustrated Perl downloader, Download Squad reader and cameltoe connoisseur, Sparticus, has produced the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Downloader 2011. It's a simple Perl script that you can run on Windows, Mac and Linux -- and before you know it, your computer will be positively overflowing with bikini-clad babes.

Like last year, the script doesn't only download the final, glossy-magazine-destined photos. There's tons of behind-the-scenes stuff, and lots of shots that simply didn't make the final cut. Last year there were around 1200 photos to download -- we're still running this year's downloader, but it looks like there could be even more!

Linux users, you'll be able to simply download the script, chmod +x, and run. Windows users will need a copy of wget and a Perl distro, such as ActivePerl. Mac users can use the Xcode Developer Tools.

Alternatively, be a cool kid and run Ubuntu in VirtualBox!

Ken Jennings talks about losing to Watson, being human after all

In a piece for Slate titled "My Puny Human Brain," former-Jeopardy-greatest Ken Jennings talks briefly through his experience playing against IBM's Watson. If you were hoping for some sour grapes, you won't find it here, but Ken gives a great insight into what it feels like to be an underdog human up against a PR darling supercomputer. "Watson has lots in common with a top-ranked human Jeopardy! player: It's very smart, very fast, speaks in an uneven monotone, and has never known the touch of a woman." Ken wraps it up on an uplifting, humans-are-going-to-be-alright-after-all note, and we seem to have something in our eye...
