Firefox 5 UI mock-ups from Mozilla: pinned sites, slicker search bar, and more

Over the last few days, Mozilla's lovely Are We Pretty Yet? has been steadily accumulating Firefox 5 interface mock-ups. If you haven't visited AWPY before, its primary purpose is for listing and fixing bugs in the Firefox 4 UI -- but it seems it will now also be used to showcase potential interfaces for Firefox 5.

The mock-ups include concepts for 'desktop apps', which are Firefox's answer to IE9's pinned sites, and hopefully they'll re-use the same meta tags so that website developers won't have to accommodate both browsers. Presumably a similar interface will be used for Open Web Apps when they finally emerge, too.

There are some suggested changes to the search bar, mostly to make it more streamlined -- and no sign of it being merged with the location bar, like Chrome or IE9.

Firefox Sync looks like it will be more prominently advertised, both on the about:home default start page, and in Remember Password and Edit Bookmark dialogs.

Finally, it looks like enabling/disabling and updating add-ons could be significantly streamlined in Firefox 5. It seems a little odd to break out into a separate window after moving to a tabbed add-on manager in Firefox 4, though.

It's unlikely that any of these are more than design concepts at the moment, so don't get too scared or excited. We shouldn't have long to wait before real builds of Firefox 5 begin to emerge, anyway -- probably by the end of March.

There are a couple of full-size screenshots of the mock-ups after the break.

Microsoft details Windows Phone 7 update problem, 'small number' of Samsungs affected

Redmond is opening up and offering a few facts, stats, and tips around its first update to Windows Phone 7 -- an update that didn't go smoothly for everyone -- and it sounds like there are at least three distinct failure modes, two of which are pretty simple to fix. The company figures that somewhere around 10 percent of users attempting the upgrade encountered a problem, but of those, "nearly half" failed because they lacked a proper internet connection or enough disk space (turns out the update process takes a backup of the phone's contents just in case something goes horribly awry). Most of the remainder may have been swept up in the issue affecting "a small number" of Samsung devices, an issue that the company says it's working to fix as quickly as possible -- and in the meantime, they've turned the update off for those models.

Put simply, when you get prompted to install the update, Microsoft simply recommends that you've got plenty of hard drive space on your PC (you can't do this one over the air) and a solid connection to the interwebs; some 90 percent succeeded in installing the new code, which isn't too shabby considering this is the very first update to the platform they've attempted so far. Let's just hope that brick rate is down to zero by the time the good stuff comes, right?

YouTube Ad Blitz 2011 lets you watch, share and rate Super Bowl ads

youtubeadblitz2011
While I'm not a huge sports fan, I can appreciate a good ad when I see one; and the Super Bowl sometimes feels like it's as much about the ads as it is about the sport.

YouTube Ad Blitz is an official YouTube channel going strong since 2007, with over 21 million channel views. It shows all Super Bowl commercials, uploaded instantly once they're broadcast in-game. Saw an ad you liked? Now you can watch it again! Better yet, the channel makes it super-easy to share ads with friends who missed them during the game.

A big part of the fun is being able to vote for your favorite commercials; it's actually an official contest, with rules written up by lawyers and all. The contest goes on until Feb 14th, and you can vote as you watch, using the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons on each video.

At any rate, contest or no contest, this is a beautiful showcase of the latest and greatest in advertising.

Facebook Messenger iPhone app lets you voice chat with your friends

facebook voice chat iphone app
Vivox offers a Facebook app which allows you to voice chat with your friends as you browse the site from your desktop, but what about while you're out and about? A mobile option would be nice, too. That's what the developers at Crisp App think, too, and its iPhone app lets you do just that.

Grab Facebook Messenger for $2.99 in the App Store, and you'll have a convenient way to voice chat with your Facebook friends on-the-go. Select a friend's name from your contact list, tap the call button, and they'll receive a link to complete the connection in their current Facebook tab. Once your friend clicks through, your VoIP chat session is ready to go. GigaOm reports a slight delay on both the desktop and iPhone app, but overall reviews are very positive so far.

Curious to see how it works? Check out the video demo after the break.

Mockingbird is a fantastic in-browser tool for creating website wireframes

mockingbird
Sometimes you've got an idea in your head for a website or page layout, or even for an application. But then you need to somehow get it out of your head and actually look at it, or show it to someone. While drawing on the back of a napkin is a time-honored strategy, that is not always ideal because you can't edit your drawing later, and it may be difficult to share.

Mockingbird is like a digital version of the back of a napkin, but on steroids. It runs in-browser, and is powered by the magic of HTML5 (so it might work on an iPad). Mockingbird provides you with a rich toolbox of UI widgets like buttons, rectangles (both rounded and "regular") and image placeholders, as well as more Web-specific elements like a "search box" or vertical/horizontal navigation bars.

All you have to do is drag-and-drop the elements around the screen and resize them until it looks just right. I've tried it with one website mockup, and the result was pleasingly clear - it communicated exactly what I had in mind.

Mockingbird is a paid service (starting at $9/month) but you can use the tool itself even without an account - you just won't be able to save your work. That's not as bad as it sounds, because more often than not you may just want to relay a quick idea.

Android '2.4' Gingerbread will arrive in April, will support dual-core Honeycomb apps

No, that's not a typo: an update to Android 2.3 will arrive in April to allow single-core smartphones to run Honeycomb's dual-core apps. The news comes from hardware manufacturer Viewsonic, which insists the new version will be numbered 2.4 -- and it won't be called Ice Cream as expected; it will just be an updated version of Gingerbread.

Apparently the only change between 2.3 and 2.4 is the support for Honeycomb apps, which are designed to run with a dual-core processor -- and Android 2.3, as it stands, only supports single-core processors. Viewsonic is releasing a 'jumbo' smartphone with a 4.1" screen, which is why it understandably wants access to the Honeycomb library of tablet-oriented apps.

We're not sure why Google would break away from its now-famous versioning system. It's also odd that this news comes from a third party, and not Google itself. We wouldn't be surprised if this actually turns out to be version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, rather than 2.4. The same source at Viewsonic also says that Ice Cream will be 3.1, and thus another tablet-oriented OS -- which would mean that the next smartphone version of Android could begin with 'J.'

BlackBerry PlayBook Scrapbook app creates and shares fun photo collages (video)

At Mobile World Congress, RIM continues to showcase the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Today, it's shared video footage of a very slick photo editing tool called Scrapbook. The app was developed by The Astonishing Tribe, a Swedish development house RIM acquired back in December 2010.

As you can see in the video after the break, Scrapbook makes it easy to throw together (almost literally) fun photo collages on the PlayBook which you can then share with your friends. Scrapbook also lets you add cartoony speech, thought balloons and other stick-on elements to your creations, and it sure looks like a lot of fun to use.

WinPho 7 Update Gives Some Phones Fatal Brain Spasm

Microsoft released its first software update for Windows Phone 7 this week -- and promptly stubbed its toe. The update reportedly caused problems with Omnia 7 and Focus smartphones, both made by Samsung. Some users complained that the update left their phones "bricked," or rendered completely inoperable. Microsoft has apparently temporary disabled the update for these devices.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone & iPad updated with video-out support

If you have an iPod, iPhone or iPad with the SlingPlayer Mobile app, you now have a Slingbox to go since the app was just updated with support for video out over component cables in high quality mode. Version 2.1 also includes a few unspecified bugfixes, but we're figuring the opportunity to watch TV, on a TV in high bitrate streams is more than enough to get users mashing that update button and digging out their unused connectors.

What Can 3D Do for the Web?

In 2009, director James Cameron made people love seeing 3D movies in the theater again. In 2010, electronics companies began offering the first in-home stereoscopic 3D TV sets, and content providers launched Blu-ray 3D and broadcast 3D channels. Now it's 2011, and there are still big changes happening in the 3D space, but there's one major source of media and entertainment that hasn't really come a-knocking to the 3D door yet.

Samsung launches five more i-Function NX Series lenses, we long for broader compatibility

Outside of the D3S's ridiculous low-light performance, Samsung's i-Function lenses just might be the best thing to happen to digital photography in the past five years. Sure, some of you are probably spitting out your morning Cup of Joe at the thought, but it's one of those things that you truly have to use to appreciate. For those out of the loop, have a peek back at our NX100 preview, and once you're sold, feast your eyes on five new ones in the 2011 NX Series stable. The new range is comprised of Samsung's 18-200mm multi-purpose Long Zoom Lens, a light, compact 16mm F2.4 ultra-wide pancake lens, a 60mm macro, 85mm F1.4 CSC lens (for those low-light shoots needing plenty of bokeh) and a 16-80mm standard zoom. Hit the source link for all of the specifics, but don't go hunting for prices or release dates -- those are still hidden in the background, regrettably.

Lavasoft Rogue Gallery puts fake antivirus and rogue applications on display

It's hard for less-savvy computer users to stay out of trouble on the Internet, and part of the problem is that they just don't know how to identify potential threats. Fortunately, there are plenty of great online resources you can use, or point your friends and family to. We've already covered the excellent Facecrooks, which helps users avoid trouble on Facebook, and today we're taking a look at the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery.

Lavasoft is the company behind Ad-Aware, the granddaddy of adware removal apps. Though its malware cleanup crown has been snatched away by Malwarebytes in recent years, Ad-Aware remains enormously popular -- and Lavasoft provides a nice public service by displaying the fake antivirus (fakeAV) and rogue applications it discovers for all to see.

Rogue applications are those nasty programs which appear to be useful utilities like antivirus or Windows tune-up tools. In reality, of course, they're some of the nastiest threats around. They're easy enough to spot if you know what to look for, so spending a few minutes going through the Lavasoft Rogue Gallery is highly recommend to anyone who needs a bit of help avoiding Internet dangers.

Samsung develops mobile DRAM capable of 12.8GB/sec data transfers, making all other memory jealous

Much like clockwork, Samsung's memory labs are cranking out yet another innovation in the mobile DRAM sector, with the goal being to make the next (next) generation Galaxy Tab -- and any other mobile device relying on Samsung memory -- faster than ever. This go 'round, the crew has developed a 1Gb mobile DRAM module with a wide I/O interface for smartphones and tablets, enabling it to transmit data at 12.8GB/sec. For those keeping count, that's an eightfold increase in bandwidth compared to LPDDR2 DRAM chips, and the company has also managed to trim power consumption by 87 percent all the while. In order to boost the data transfer rate, Samsung's new wide I/O DRAM uses 512 pins for input and output, dwarfing the 32 pins used in the previous generation. Following this, Sammy's hoping to provide 20nm-class 4Gb wide I/O mobile DRAM sometime in 2013, but we're hoping to see this particular development sashay into tablets that hit the market long before then. Sadly, there's no specific word on when, but you know we'll be handing that information over just as soon as we get it.

YC-Funded HelloFax: Sign And Send Faxes From Your Browser, Without The Hassle

In a perfect world, the fax machine would have taken the hint by now and made a graceful exit as it was supplanted by superior (and more environmentally friendly) technologies like email and e-signatures. Alas, faxes are still around, and some businesses insist on using them on a daily basis. Fortunately companies like eFax have sprung up to serve as stand-ins for fax machines, and now there's a new Y Combinator-funded startup that's looking to make life even easier. Meet HelloFax. Now, online fax services aren't anything new. eFax and MyFax (which was just acquired by the former) both offer robust services to deal with faxes without having to actually own a machine. At least, that's the promise. But HelloFax founders Joseph Walla and Neal O'Mara say that these services make it a pain to actually fill out forms and sign documents, which leads people to print them out, sign them, and then scan them into their computers to send them back (which sort of defeats the point). HelloFax wants to fix this.

Anonymous posts decompile of Stuxnet worm

Stuxnet is one of the more infamous worms we've read about in recent times, and it now appears that the rapscallions who are Anonymous have gotten hold of a copy of the Stuxnet code. Stuxnet, for those who aren't aware, drove attacks which crippled Iran's nuclear program. The code was pilfered from HBGary Federal after CEO Aaron Barr poked the beehive one time too many -- along with more than 70,000 corporate emails.

Anonymous have now posted a decompile of the Stuxnet code for all to see, though whether or not the group has any plans for the worm itself remains to be seen. At present, Anonymous is more focused on publicizing the HBGary emails and shedding light on some of the company's seedier dealings -- which included an offer to sell a botnet.
